Existem três princípios básicos de proteção contra incêndio em edifícios modernos. A detecção precoce e a supressão ativa são os dois mais conhecidos pelo público em geral e considerados modos ativos ou reativos de proteção. Isso significa que o incêndio aciona a resposta, fazendo com que os alarmes de fumaça ou incêndio alertem os ocupantes do edifício ou que os sistemas de sprinklers comecem a inundar a área afetada com água para suprimir ou extinguir o incêndio. Noções básicas de códigos de construção
Uma grande parte do Código Internacional de Construção trata da prevenção de incêndios. Ele difere do Código Internacional de Incêndio relacionado no sentido de que o IBC trata da prevenção de incêndios em relação à construção e ao projeto e o código de incêndio trata da prevenção de incêndios em relação à operação de um edifício concluído e ocupado.
Por exemplo, o código de construção estabelece critérios para o número, o tamanho e a localização das saídas no projeto de um edifício, enquanto o código de incêndio exige que as saídas de um edifício concluído e ocupado estejam desbloqueadas. O código de construção também trata do acesso para deficientes e da estabilidade estrutural (incluindo terremotos). O Código Internacional de Construção se aplica a todas as estruturas nas áreas em que é adotado, exceto para residências de uma e duas famílias (consulte Código Residencial Internacional).
